Since their development in the mid-1800s, pointe shoes have captivated many with their magical allure. Pointe shoes elevate a dancer, both literally and metaphorically, and are a symbol of accomplishment, hard work, and exquisite grace.

At Ballet Hartford, our professional dancers wear pointe shoes throughout the day: in class, rehearsal, and onstage. Each pair of shoes undergoes small customizations by the ballerina as she makes minor adjustments to encourage the shoe to mold to her foot's particular structure and articulation. Sadly, the life cycle of a pointe shoe can be brief, lasting from a couple of days to a couple of weeks depending on the amount of dancing required. Dancing in broken or "dead" pointe shoes promotes injury as the dancer is no longer experiencing the necessary support to keep her body in balance on her toes. We hope to raise funding to keep our dancers in new pointe shoes through our To The Pointe Fund! You can provide a ballerina with a pair of pointe shoes today (most pointe shoes cost $80-$100 per pair)!

  • Ballet Hartford is dedicated to being “for the city” and an integral part of our community.
